Matter

Category
Matter is the third of the Pattern magicks (Forces and Life preceeding it), and it concerns itself with the Patterns of non-living matter, though the precise line between the Spheres of Matter and Life varies from mage to mage.
System
Matter Perceptions. The Disciple of Matter begins by recognizing the various Patterns of Matter and learning to 'read' them. The mage, with these perceptions, can detect things hidden from normal senses. In addition to sensing the composition and properties of an object, the mage may discern structures hidden within structures. Basic Transmuation. The mage may transmute one substance into another, without changing its shape, temperature, or basic phase (solid, liquid, gas, plasma). More radical transformations require greater successes. With Forces or Life 2, those Patterns may be made matter. With Prime 2, Matter patterns may be created from pure Prime. Objects so created must be basic, simple, and composed of one homogenous substance. Highly radioactive elements cannot be created, and elaborate 'layered' creations must wait until Rank 4. Making an object hotter or colder, or changing an objects potential energy requires a conjunctional Forces effect. At the third rank of Matter, the mage can finally change the object however he desires, throwing physics to the wind. Density, volume, weight, phase, and shape may be changed. These changes are not permanent until Matter has been Mastered, however. Adepts of Matter may now perform radical changes to physical materials and may craft complex, 'quilted' patterns such as guns, coaches, or dumpsters. This creation must be fueled by Prime, Forces, or Life (using that sphere at 2 in conjunction.) Alter Properties. At Mastry of Matter wholly new substances may be created, with physics all their own. They may be nearly identical to 'normal' compounds, such as water which is pink, or they may be wholly alien, such as a cold plasma which is completely insubstantial to metal and bonds with nitrogen to form glue. Masters could, in theory, build castles with paper-thin walls and indestructable armor that feels softer than silk and weigh less than a trenchcoat.
